How to Use This Guide
This is your one-stop shop for solving common transfer application issues. Whether you’re pressing Multi-Purpose, Puff, Glitter, or Hybrid. If something doesn’t look right, start here.
Pro tip: Keep this guide at your press station. Most issues can be fixed with a simple adjustment in time, temperature, or pressure.
Section 1: General Transfer Issues
Issue (If…) | Cause | Solution (Then…) |
---|---|---|
Transfer not fully releasing | Not enough heat or pressure | Increase pressure and/or temperature slightly; ensure heat press temperature is accurate using temp strips |
Transfer still not fully releasing | Using Teflon cover sheet | Make sure the top platen of your heat press isn't retrofitted with a Teflon cover sheet; if so, remove or increase temperature in 10° increments |
Transfer still not fully releasing | Debris on the platen | Remove all seams, buttons, and zippers from the platen or use a pillow/mouse pad to lift the application area |
Edges lifting after peel | Cold spots on platen / uneven pressure | Repress with cover sheet; check pressure distribution across platen |
Cracking after wash | Under-applied with too little pressure or not enough heat | Repress with correct time, temperature, and pressure; don't alter the recipe to compensate for a heat sensitive garment |
Lacking opacity | Application temperature too hot | If pressing Howard Multi-Purpose, switch to the low-temp application settings of 310°F, 15–18 seconds, medium pressure |
Shiny box marks | Over-pressing or too much pressure | Reduce pressure; use parchment or finishing paper to soften marks |
Inconsistent results from press to press | Machine calibration varies | Use heat strips to verify true platen temp; adjust settings accordingly |
